SunRail - Central Florida's Commuter Rail

SunRail, Central Florida's first commuter rail line, is a 61.5 mile system.  The project has two construction phases, which create crucial transit connections for nearly 15 percent of the state's population and several of the region's largest employers.  It is the first segment of a larger regional transit system.

SunRail is capable of carrying the equivalent of one lane of traffic off Interstate 4 during peak travel times for a capital cost of $615 million.  Building comparable highway capacity would cost an estimated $7 billion.  Service starts in 2012, around the same time a massive I-4 reconstruction project is expected to begin.

SunRail is one of only five projects in the nation - and the only project in the state - selected by the Federal Transit Administration to enter Final Design.  Governor Charlie Crist signed the bill allowing SunRail to proceed on December 16, 2009.
