MOVE IT Campaign
Traffic incidents, not volume, account for more than half of Central Florida’s congestion.
In order to reduce traffic congestion and increase mobility in the area, METROPLAN ORLANDO, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), introduced two initiatives in January 2004: the MOVE IT…Yes You Can! campaign and the Tri County Area Open Roads Policy. Both aim for the quick clearance of traffic accidents and incidents from area roadways.
MOVE IT...Yes You Can
Have you ever been involved in a minor traffic accident on the highway? Did you leave your vehicle right where it was until the police arrived? Did you think you were not supposed to move it off the roadway? Yes, you can move your vehicle out of the way. Plus...it's Florida law.
MOVE IT is a campaign to inform the public that they can move their vehicle out of the travel lanes if they are involved in a minor traffic accident. In fact, by Florida law, drivers MUST make every reasonable effort to move a disabled vehicle or have it moved so as not to obstruct the regular flow of traffic, as long as the vehicle is moveable and there are no injuries.
MOVE IT was developed jointly by local law enforcement, fire & rescue, transportation agencies and private companies as an outgrowth of the Traffic Incident Management Executive Forum in July 2003 convened by former METROPLAN ORLANDO Chairman and former Orange County Commissioner Ted Edwards to explore ways to clear accident scenes more quickly.
Tri County Area Open Roads Policy
The Tri County Area Open Roads Policy is an agreement between FDOT, FHP, the police and fire/rescue officials in Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties and all 19 municipalities in those counties to clear all incidents from the roadway within 90 minutes of the arrival of the first responding officer. This commitment of all the region’s emergency responders is a first for the entire country. (Click here to view participants)
