METROPLAN ORLANDO Board Adopts Innovative 20-Year Transportation Plan for Central Florida

8/12/2009

2030 Long Range Transportation Plan sets a course for development of future transportation systems in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties.

METROPLAN ORLANDO is setting a new course for future transportation planning in Central Florida with the adoption of the 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan. The federally-required plan includes considerations beyond a standard approach to better identify the impact of land use decisions in the transportation planning process and the financial investment necessary to execute the long range plan.

"It is clear that a business-as-usual approach to transportation planning does not address future transportation needs in Central Florida," said John Quiñones, METROPLAN ORLANDO chairman and Osceola County commissioner. "This long range transportation plan provides a framework for creating more transportation choices like passenger rail, bus rapid transit, and technology-driven travel tools – choices that are necessary to have a more balanced transportation system."

The 2030 Long Range Transportation Plan includes a strong emphasis on transit, including a future passenger rail network connecting Orange, Osceola, and Seminole Counties. A rail network is already taking shape as work to finalize SunRail, a 61.5 mile commuter rail system, continues.

Planning efforts for the 2030 Plan began in 2006 and grew to include extensive technical analysis, transportation modeling, public opinion research, advisory committee input, and broad public involvement. The preliminary adopted plan is available online at www.metroplanorlando.com/site/lrtp. Resources, including technical reports, presentations, graphics, video, and a summary of public input, can also be accessed online or by contacting METROPLAN ORLANDO at (407) 481-5672.
