Worst First

In March 2005, local elected officials, law enforcement and transportation agencies pledged to work together on traffic safety at a safety summit called Worst First:  Regional Traffic Safety Solutions.  At the meeting, the 10 worst behaviors leading to crashes and 10 target locations where they happen were listed.  The goal of the listing of locations was to come up with solutions in order to take the target locations off of the list by making the roadways safer.

The result of the safety summit?  In one word, COORDINATION.  METROPLAN ORLANDO has worked together with local governments, transportation agencies and Community Traffic Safety Teams (CTSTs) on the 3 E's of traffic safety: engineering, enforcement and education.

Engineering - conducted engineering field audits of the 10 target locations to work on recommendations for improvements

Enforcement - worked with several local law enforcement agencies on a crosswalk enforcement sting operation where motorists were targeted for not yielding to pedestrians (over 45 motorists per hour were pulled over)

Education - worked with the media to raise public awareness of individual driver responsibility; created public service announcement videos on bicyclist and pedestrian safety; held training classes for bicyclists and pedestrians

Traffic safety status updates are provided to the METROPLAN ORLANDO Board.  During October 2005, the METROPLAN ORLANDO Board approved a Safety Conscious Plan with measurable performance measurements and implementation steps.
